Thanks of coming to the happy hour

General NewsThank you for coming out to the happy hour yesterday at Cap City Brewery. Lots of new faces and a lot of discussion about ideas for events.

The goal of the club is to organize social events and help Alumni and prospective Alumni meet and extend their social and professional networks.

Here is what we are thinking about planning

Happy hour in October
Happy hour after the Scottish Walk in Alexandria on Saturday December 6th
Burns Supper in January, in connection with St Andrews University
Meetup events for the 6 Nations Rugby
Ceilidh sometime in 2009

If you have any ideas on events that you you think others would be interested please log into the website and leave a comment or send them to us at info at eduni-dc.org

I have created a small poll on the website http://www.eduni-dc.org/polls/index.php?pid=20080910113033107 that I would ask everyone to fill out so we can get some ideas of where people would like to have the next happy hour, what events you are interested in attending, and how much you would be willing to pay for those events.

Thanks

Ian Macdonald
President

Reminder: Happy hour June 11th 6:30pm

General NewsJust wanted to post a quick reminder about our happy hour this week.

Time: 6.30 - 8 PM
Date: 11th June 2008
Venue: Science Club, 1136 19th St NW, Washington, DC. (202) 775-0747

The Science Club is located on 19th St between the Dupont Circle and Farragut North metro stops. We have a private room booked; as you enter the main bar from the street there are some stairs to the right hand side, and before them will be a sign (which may be small, and may just have 'Paula' and an arrow on it). We will probably be on the 2nd floor.

Notes from Meeting May 7th 2008

General NewsBelow are the meeting notes from the first committee held on May 7th 2008. If you are interested in helping out with any of the events please contact us at info at eduni-dc.org

====
Meeting Notes
====

In Attendance
Rebecca, Ian, Paula and Jane from Edinburgh University

The following decisions were made

1. The name of the group will be Edinburgh University Alumni Club of
Washington DC

2. Anyone with a connection to Edinburgh University will be allowed to
join, so that includes Alumni, non graduating students, spouses, partners,
university staff etc.

3. To be considered a member you must be on the eduni-dc-announce mailing
list.

4. At this time we decided not to collect a membership fee, we may change
this at a later point but felt that it was hard to ask for money when we
haven't produced anything yet.

5. Committee members are elected by the following process
Someone nominates
Someone seconds
The person with the majority vote of those present at the time of voting
wins.

6. The Annual General meeting (AGM) will be held once a year, (that was a
hard decision) and committee members will have a one year duration and
will be voted on at the AGM

7. The following positions were voted on
President: Ian
Vice President and secretary: Rebecca
Events/Treasurer: Paula

8. We still have 3 ordinary committee member positions open

9. An extraordinary general meeting may be called by any committee member.
3 weeks notice must be given and all members will be
contacted via email.

10. In the event of the club is dissolved the president will nominate a
charity to receive all remaining funds

11. Part of the clubs goal is to support the International Office. They
may ask for volunteers from time to time to speak on behalf of the
university to prospective students.

We talked about connecting with other universities when planning events.
Ian has reached out to a number of universities and needs to send contacts
and other related emails to the committee

We talked about planning a number of events, the first event would be a
Ceilidh in October, Ian mentioned that the RFD has a back room that may
be a good location, Dave Alexander (the owner) has scottish connections so
would be willing to work with us, we would just need to find a band and
set everything up. This would be an event we would need to charge for.

The second event would be a burns supper, in January, we should reach out
to other universities to help plan this event.

The third event would be something related to the six nations rugby, one
thought was to find out if the British Embassy could help with this.

We already have a linkedin.com group, one of the benefits of being a
member of
the group would be membership of the linkedin.com group. Rebecca is going
to investigate creating a face book group as well.

The next thing we should be doing is reaching out to all the Edinburgh Uni
alumni in DC, VA, MD, PA, and WV to let them know that a new Alumni group
has been formed and those interested in joining should get in contact with
us. We should work with Liz to find the best way to do this. The exact
details of this weren't discussed in the meeting, but it could be a form
they fill in on a website or sending an email to us, we could also supply
a postal address if needed.

It was also noted by Jane that Ian needs to put some of the photos he got
from Liz up on the website.
