Hike on Sunday 15th Novermber: Harris Hollow and Big Devil's Stairs in the Northern Shenandoah

General NewsSunday, Nov 15th, 9am.
Alumni are invited to join the NIH hiking club on a walk this weekend: Harris Hollow and Big Devil's Stairs in the Northern Shenandoah with a trip to the Gray Ghost winery after the hike.

Big Devil's is about the finest canyon hike in the entire Shenandoah NP, but since the landowner blocked access at the foot of the trail, can only be entered from the top. So from the Harris Hollow Road behind Little Washington we take the Harris Hollow Trail to meet the Bluff Trail. Down the rim of Big Devil's canyon, then back up the Canyon. return by Bluff and Harris Hollow. Parking is by the roadside, so probably a maximum of 4 vehicles, and hence about 16 hikers. This is a strenuous hike for people with adequate boots, who are familiar with the rigours of hiking hilly terrain.

The University will be in the US this November and we would like to invite you and a guest to join us at events in Boston, New York and Washington.

In Boston, alumni will have the opportunity to sample some world-class whiskies. A tutor will be there to guide us through the tasting and educate us in this complex spirit.

Professor ffrench Constant is Head of Edinburgh's Multiple Sclerosis Society and Deputy Director of the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM). The lecture will ask the questions 'What is stem cell research?', 'How does it work?' and 'What does it mean for our future?'.

We value our relationship with our US alumni and we do hope that you will be able to join us in November. It would be helpful if you could confirm your attendance, specifying which event you will be attending, by October 23rd by contacting me at rachelle.norry@ed.ac.uk or please call me on +441316509638. Great North Mountain/Laurel Run hike on Sunday October 18th.

General NewsFollowing on from the success of last weeks hike, here are the details of the next Alumni hike.

Great North Mountain/Laurel Run hike on Sunday October 18th.

It's a 2 hour drive out to Woodstock Va, and an 8 mile hike with spectacular views off the ridge. Fall colours should be at peak at the higher elevations, and this is a beautiful but mostly undiscovered trail (doesn't have the crowds of Old Rag). There will probably be a stop at Kimberley's Konfections in Strasburg, VA for ice cream on the return trip.

This hike is in collaboration with the NIH hiking club, so prospective hikers should contact Stephen Nightingale (j.s.nightingale@gmail.com) to let him know how many people to expect or for further info (carpooling etc).

The hike meets at 8am at Grosvenor Metro Station in the Park and Ride lot.
