Burns Supper - last chance for tickets!

General NewsDear Alumni,

We look forward to welcoming you on Saturday January 30th, 2010. In answer to your questions:

Yes, if you are a member you may pay the $75 rate for your guests. Patrons automatically become members.

Yes, there will be vegetarian haggis if you prefer- please let us know as soon as possible if you would like that option and did not so elect already on Paypal.

Yes, there will be wine with your appetizer and entree.

Yes, the whisky toasts will be with single malt Scotch-- Glenmorangie, in fact.

Yes, there will be Scottish Country Dancing to The Devil's Tailors. We'll definitely enjoy the Dashing White Sergeant and the Gay Gordons. And we'll try the Eightsome Reel and maybe Strip the Willow. Remember that the Dashing White Sergeant is danced in a three with either one lady and two gentlemen, or one gentleman and two ladies.

In fact, we've asked the band to remind us of the steps to the Dashing White Sergeant and the Gay Gordons as they set up beforehand. Anyone arriving at 5:30 will be given a lesson.

Apologies to anybody who previously tried to buy tickets but encountered problems with the paypal site - the issue has been resolved so buying tickets should be plain sailing!

Hike on Sunday 15th Novermber: Harris Hollow and Big Devil's Stairs in the Northern Shenandoah

General NewsSunday, Nov 15th, 9am.
Alumni are invited to join the NIH hiking club on a walk this weekend: Harris Hollow and Big Devil's Stairs in the Northern Shenandoah with a trip to the Gray Ghost winery after the hike.

Big Devil's is about the finest canyon hike in the entire Shenandoah NP, but since the landowner blocked access at the foot of the trail, can only be entered from the top. So from the Harris Hollow Road behind Little Washington we take the Harris Hollow Trail to meet the Bluff Trail. Down the rim of Big Devil's canyon, then back up the Canyon. return by Bluff and Harris Hollow. Parking is by the roadside, so probably a maximum of 4 vehicles, and hence about 16 hikers. This is a strenuous hike for people with adequate boots, who are familiar with the rigours of hiking hilly terrain.

The University will be in the US this November and we would like to invite you and a guest to join us at events in Boston, New York and Washington.

In Boston, alumni will have the opportunity to sample some world-class whiskies. A tutor will be there to guide us through the tasting and educate us in this complex spirit.

Professor ffrench Constant is Head of Edinburgh's Multiple Sclerosis Society and Deputy Director of the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM).
